Hillside House
This three-level home is nestled into a southern hillside. A large living room window wall opens to an expansive view, with the surrounding deck extending the interior space.
The heavily insulated roof covers the house like a blanket and forms a canopy
to block the summer sun. The wood frame house is constructed around a core
of structural steel elements. A central column ties the steel ridge beams
to a welded truss that spans the lower level studio space and defines an
upper level quadrant of bedrooms. The truss is softened by a cherry screen,
while the steel structure is in contrast to a central brick chimney and
a floor of red oak.
